Protective Humoral Immunity to Influenza Infection

Nicole Baumgarth received a five year grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases division of NIH to study “Protective Humoral Immunity to Influenza Infection”.  Antibody-mediated immunity generated by B lymphocytes is important for immune protection from infections. We are investigating a particular type of B cell response that we show to be induced after infection with influenza virus, but not after vaccination. We aim to identify the signals needed to induce this type of immune response and to study how important this response is for overall immune protection from influenza virus infection.
