Awarded Project: "Defining Protective and Disease-Reducing Immunity to Borrelia Burgdorferi Infection"

Defining Protective and Disease-Reducing Immunity to Borrelia Burgdorferi Infection

Dr. Nicole Baumgarth was awarded a three year project through the DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program to work on a Lyme disease study.   Following infection with Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, antibodies are generated that can reduce the number of Borrelia in the infected host, but they cannot totally eliminate the infection. This grant proposal is to study whether the antibodies cannot not bind to the Borrelia, or whether they bind but are then not fully functional and therefore unable to clear the infection.
