The Discovery of AIDS and HIV: Contributions of California
Community to the Early Years of AIDS
September 25, 2009 – Center for Comparative Medicine, UC Davis
We are sponsoring a one-day event on September 25, 2009 at UC Davis to celebrate the discovery of HIV-1 25 years ago. Dr. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi, co-discover of the virus at the Pasteur Institute and recent Nobel Laureate will be our special guest. The purpose of the meeting is to recall the critical role of California-based clinicians, researchers, and others in establishing the clinical, epidemiological and virological features of AIDS, with an emphasis on the 1981-1988 period. This event will highlight the collaborations fostered among Academic, Industry, Government, Foundations, and Community groups throughout the State. The challenges for dealing with the ongoing AIDS epidemic will be emphasized. A tentative agenda is shown below.
