Two major lactiferous ducts are seen longitudinally to descend several centimeters before any blue lobules are formed. This is indeed nature's nursing bottle. The area needs to be empty so that the infant can bite down on the lactiferous ducts while nursing.

This histological section shows the nipple and some areola. Epithelium stains blue with hematoxylin and stroma stains red with eosin. Note lactiferous duct at the surface of the nipple. It is plugged with keratin.
