Dr. Baumgarth is a cellular immunologist with expertise in antiviral immunity. Her research employs infectious disease models to identify and characterize the basic mechanisms that regulate immune responses. Her experimental models include a mouse model of an acute respiratory tract viral infection (influenza virus) and in collaboration with Dr. Barthold a mouse model of chronic systemic bacterial infection (Borrelia burgdorferi). Furthermore, through collaborative studies with researchers at UCSF, she studies the effects of HIV infection on regional immunity in the mucosa of the oral cavity. Dr. Baumgarth has a special interest in multicolor flow cytometry for its application in immunology.
